GLASGOW, Scotland, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A 30-year-old suspect was in court Friday to face murder charges for the strangulation of a 21-year-old accounting student in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Scotsman said Roshan Dantis entered no plea during his preliminary hearing in High Court where he is charged with killing Nepalese student Khusbu Shah, who disappeared in June and whose remains were found nearly a week after she was officially reported missing.

Authorities allege Dantis, who received a Nov. 23 trial date, beat and strangled Shah at her Glasgow home before using a cleaver to sever the Glasgow Caledonian University student's head and hands.

Dantis allegedly attempted to hide Shah's remains in a large bag hidden at a railway embankment in Glasgow's Dennistoun district.

In addition to facing a charge for allegedly hiding the remains, Dantis is accused of attempting to extort nearly $191,000 from Shah's husband, Nagendra Shah.

The Scotsman said Dantis allegedly contacted Nagendra Shah by text message following his wife's disappearance, demanding the money his wife's return and the couple's safety.
