Suicide attackers kill 4 Pakistan soldiers

The incidents occurred in the country's volatile northwestern Waziristan region, where Pakistani forces have been battling Taliban militants for months.

A suicide attacker blew himself up moments after he was stopped at a military checkpoint in the Khyber agency, killing four soldiers, a military official quoted by CNN said. Khyber is one of seven districts in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas along the Afghan border, outside Pakistan's four provinces.

Another bomber blew himself up when soldiers raided a home in Northwest Frontier Province's Swat Valley, the military's press office said. Two soldiers were wounded and two militants, including the suicide bomber, were killed.

The attacks followed a report in Pakistan's English-language Dawn newspaper that quoted a Taliban spokesman as saying suicide bombers were being prepared to avenge the death of the brother of new Pakistan Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

"We will take revenge" for the killing Monday of Kalimullah Mehsud, Qari Hussain was quoted as saying.

Mehsud was killed in a battle in the insurgent stronghold of North Waziristan, mountainous region of northwest Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan.
