WICHITA, Kan., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A Kansas sheriff's deputy died of gunshot wounds and a suspect in his death was killed by other officers, authorities say.

The Sedgwick County deputy, Brian Etheridge, died late Monday afternoon after being shot hours earlier, setting off a massive manhunt by scores of heavily armed officers from state, federal and local agencies around the Wichita, Kan., area, The Wichita Eagle reported.

Sheriff Bob Hinshaw told reporters that the suspect, whom he declined to name, died at 6:10 p.m. Monday after being taken to a hospital following a gunfire exchange with officers near McConnell Air Force Base. The newspaper said a street near airbase had been lined with mobile command vehicles, Humvees, K-9 units, ambulances and fire trucks.

Hinshaw said Etheridge, 26, was an "excellent deputy" who had spent a little more than a year with the sheriff's office, leaving behind a wife and small child.

Hundreds of people turned out to Wichita's Old Town Square after 9 p.m for a candlelight vigil for the slain deputy, the Eagle reported.

"This is the least we can do for the family," Kevin Lackey, an Eastborough, Kan., police officer, told the newspaper.
