Malaysia upholds caning of beer drinker

KUANTAN, Malaysia, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A Malaysian judge has upheld the caning sentence of a man who downed a beer at a nightclub last year.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno faces six strokes with a cane and a hefty fine for violating Islamic law by drinking beer at a Cherating club that was raided by the Pahang Islamic Religious Department.

The chief judge agreed that the sentence was appropriate under the law, The Star reported Monday.

Another man and a waitress at the club were also sentenced to be caned. Their sentences have also been appealed.
