Uighur activist's Taiwan plans opposed

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Taiwanese Interior Minister Jiang Yi-huah said Friday Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer should not be allowed to visit Taiwan.

Jiang said Taiwan should not allow Kadeer to enter the country since the Uighur World Congress led by the activist has ties to an unspecified terrorist group, eTaiwan News reported.

Multiple Taiwanese civic groups on Wednesday invited Kadeer to visit Taiwan and he accepted. Kadeer has yet to apply for a visa for the visit.

Premier Wu Den-yih said Friday said Taiwan's national interests, such as the country's image and ties with China, would influence his administration's decision regarding Kadeer's visit.

The Chinese government recently succeeded in having a documentary about Kadeer removed from a film festival in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, eTaiwan News reported.
