HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Linda McMahon, chief executive of the World Wrestling Entertainment empire, says she will join the Republican U.S. Senate primary field in Connecticut.
McMahon, 60, on Tuesday joined a crowded GOP field in seeking to go up against incumbent Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported. She is the wife of WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon, to whom she has been married for 43 years.
"I have spent the past 30 years growing what began as a 13-employee small business into a publicly traded, global entertainment company that now provides over 500 jobs here in Connecticut,'' McMahon said in a statement. "I understand what it takes to balance a budget, create jobs and grow the economy. Washington is out of control, and sadly, Sen. Chris Dodd has lost his way and our trust."
Linda McMahon's spokesman, Ed Patru, said she would entirely bankroll her Senate run, and does not intend to accept political action committee donations.
"She's the kind of candidate that's the future of the party,'' Patru told the Courant. "She's not part of the establishment, she's not indebted to special interests.''
