The attacker fled on foot when passersby approached, police said.

The woman, who was not able to give police a description of the attacker, was treated at a hospital in Oak Lawn, police said.

The university sent an e-mail to students, faculty and staff with safety tips, which included locking windows and doors at all times and avoiding locations where criminals have an opportunity to attack, university Director of Public Safety Barbara O'Connor said.

O'Connor also advised not walking alone or near vacant construction sites, alleys and wooded areas, and carrying a loud whistle or personal alarm to let others know when help is needed.
