Tiger kills employee at Vietnamese zoo

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- One employee at a Vietnamese zoo was killed and another severely injured by a tiger that jumped the walls of its enclosure.

The two men were planting trees in an adjacent enclosure Thursday at the Dai Nam Zoo when they were mauled, the Thanh Nien newspaper reported. A third worker escaped by jumping into a moat.

Nguyen Cong Danh, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene. Nguyen Thanh Giau, 21, was taken to Binh Duong General Hospital with injuries to his head and neck.

The zoo is part of a large resort and entertainment complex about 25 miles from Ho Chi Minh City.

Duong Than Phi, the zoo's director, said the Indochina tiger may have been coming into heat. Keepers say the tiger may also have been spooked by cranes used in the tree planting.

An inspection this summer found the zoo had 13 tigers and was only registered for seven.

Inspectors said enclosures appeared safe and the animals were well cared for.
