Suspect sought in California slayings

SUN VALLEY, Calif., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Police were working to determine who killed two sisters found with their throats slashed in their Sun Valley, Calif., home, officials said.

Police said the girls' mother, hospitalized with knife wounds to her upper body and wrists, was described as a person of interest but not considered a suspect, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Los Angeles police Det. Gus Villanueva said investigators haven't determined a motive for the slayings. He also said "the stabbing weapon is in custody."

Villanueva said the sisters, ages 12 and 17, and their mother were found Wednesday by police responding to a 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon. One girl was found in the main house and the other in a garage-like building converted into living quarters. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Villanueva said a 14-year-old sibling was not at the scene and has been accounted for by detectives.
