British man, 101, dies holding wife's hand

PLYMOUTH, England, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A 101-year-old man in Plymouth, England, died Tuesday as his wife of 81 years, also 101, held his hand, the couple's son said.

Frank and Anita Milford spent their entire married life in Plymouth, including during the German blitzkrieg in World War II. They escaped being hit by two bombs, including one that fell on their house, the BBC reported.

"He knew it was his time and I think he simply died of old age," said the couple's son, Frank, 76, who added that his father was "sharp as a tack" and had a good sense of humor until the end.

The Milfords would have become Britain's oldest married couple in February 2010, the BBC said.
