Man, 78, found trapped in sinkhole

OTTAWA, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A 78-year-old Canadian man was recovering from dehydration Friday after construction workers found him trapped in a suburban sinkhole near Ottawa.

Ottawa Police Inspector John Maxwell told the Ottawa Citizen the unidentified man was found in a boggy and treed area by construction workers Thursday.

"He would have been walking along and, poof," said Maxwell. "He fell into a natural hole, but once he was in it was a sinkhole."

The man was disoriented and told rescuers he had been there for four days, but Maxwell said that couldn't be confirmed.

Construction worker Eddie Quast said he was working at clearing land when he heard someone call out "hello," and found the man stuck in mud in the hole.

"He looked pruned up," Quast said.

Neighbors told the Citizen the last time they saw the man was on Sunday.
