WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A White House spokesman says the home of the U.S. president is changing its e-mail signup procedures to avoid sending out unwanted e-mails.
White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said in a statement the apparent need for e-mail changes was highlighted by a recent series of complaints from several recipients of a healthcare e-mail, The Politico reported Monday.
Those who contacted the White House regarding the healthcare e-mails said they did not wish to receive updates.
Shapiro insisted the White House's e-mail list is based on its Web site and not purchased e-mail lists. Shapiro said the changes should make the White House's e-mail system clearer for visitors.
"We are implementing measures to make subscribing to e-mails clearer, including preventing advocacy organizations from signing people up to our lists without their permission when they deliver petition signatures and other messages on individual's behalf," Shapiro said Sunday.
