Sept. 11 suspects could face Va. trials

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Sept. 11 terrorist attack suspects, including the alleged mastermind of the attacks, could face trials in Newport News, Va., law enforcement sources say.

The Newport News Daily Press reported Thursday that unidentified sources said Khalid Sheik Mohammed could be among a number of Guantanamo Bay inmates facing trials at the city's new high-security courthouse.

Mohammed has claimed responsibility for orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Newport News city spokeswoman Kim Lee would not confirm the possibility her city might host the terrorist suspects' trials.

"Should this become a real possibility, we will be ready to work with everyone involved -- federal, state and local," Lee said. "What goes on inside the courtroom is not our business. That's the federal prosecutors' business."
