India intercepts North Korean sugar ship

NEW DELHI, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- India seized a North Korean ship full of sugar after it anchored in the Bay of Bengal and refused communication with naval officials, authorities said.

The ship, with a crew of 39 aboard, was sailing from Thailand to Iraq when it changed course and anchored off Hut Bay without approval, said K.R. Nautiyal, a deputy inspector general of the Indian coast guard.

India's coast guard intercepted the ship Wednesday, firing warning shots when the ship failed to respond to calls from Indian officials, Nautiyal told CNN in a story published Saturday.

"There were several inconsistencies," Nautiyal told CNN, adding that the ship would be allowed to leave when the investigation was completed.

The ship was taken to Port Blair, the main administrative center of the archipelago, CNN reported.
