First 9/11 death trial to start in April

NEW YORK, July 29 (UPI) -- A federal judge in New York set an April 12 trial date in the wrongful-death lawsuits filed over the hijackings of two U.S. airliners on Sept. 11, 2001.

The three lawsuits were filed by the only families not to accept earlier settlements in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

"We've fought for this for so long," Mike Low, father of Boston-based American Airlines flight attendant Sara Low, told the Boston Herald. "Their voices were silenced by terrorists, so we have to speak up."

It will be up to the attorneys handling the three cases to decide which one will go first, the Herald said Wednesday.

The Herald said the trial could shed additional light on how the al-Qaida hijackers were able to penetrate U.S. airline security and commandeer four passenger jets.

The defendants in the suits include air transport security companies as well as American and United Airlines.
