Bulgaria Cabinet resignation approved

SOFIA, Bulgaria, July 22 (UPI) -- Bulgaria's parliament Wednesday approved the resignation of a Socialist government to open the way for a center-right cabinet of Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov.

The caretaker government of Sergey Stanishev's socialists is to continue its duties until Monday when Borisov, slated to become prime minister, plans to announce his government, officials said Wednesday.

Stanishev was appointed prime minister in August 2005, the Sofia News agency said.

Borisov's rightist GERB party defeated Stanishev's socialists in parliamentary elections July 5.

Borisov, 50, a former bodyguard and a former police chief, has become one of Bulgaria's most popular politicians saying he will solve the country's problems resulting from corruption and organized crime.

Bulgaria became member of the European Union Jan. 1, 2007, and in the past years EU officials denied nearly $1 billion in funds waiting for the Sofia government to seriously contain corruption and organized crime.
