Woman allegedly left baby in waste tank

CAMBRIDGE, Md., July 2 (UPI) -- Police in Cambridge, Md., say a 44-year-old woman gave birth in a portable toilet and then left her newborn in the site's waste tank.

Police Lt. Wayne Bromwell said Candy Vigneri allegedly dropped her newborn into the waste tank before exiting the toilet and having a cigarette at a nearby picnic table in Long Wharf Park, CNN reported Thursday.

Vigneri allegedly even warned a man not to use the toilet as she sat nearby, police said.

"Don't go in there, I just had a baby there," police quoted Vigneri as telling the male passerby, who immediately contacted authorities.

Police said Vigneri eventually returned to the toilet and retrieved the infant, who was found coated with a blue antibacterial chemical agent.

The baby, who was found unresponsive by emergency personnel, was taken to the hospital and was later said to be in stable condition.

CNN said Vigneri was arrested Wednesday and faces charges of reckless endangerment and child cruelty.
