Wheel smashes through truck's windshield

TORONTO, June 20 (UPI) -- A trucker escaped with minor injuries when a wheel flew off a U-Haul trailer and smashed through his windshield in Toronto, police said.

Guy Orphanos of Montreal had been driving west on Highway 401 in North York about 10:30 a.m. Friday when he spotted the wheel bouncing across the highway into incoming traffic, the Toronto Sun reported Saturday.

"It happened so fast, I really didn't have time to think about it," Orphanos said.

Orphanos, whose truck was carrying cherries, said he slowed just before the wheel crashed through the windshield, hit his shoulder and jammed against his steering wheel.

Though covered in glass and blood, he suffered only minor cuts to his face and arms and managed to pull the rig over to the side of the highway, police said.

The wheel probably would have hit Orphanos in the head if it hadn't been stopped by the steering wheel, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave Woodford told the Sun.

"It's a miracle the driver wasn't seriously hurt and that he didn't lose control of his vehicle," Woodford said.

Investigators planned to check the maintenance records for the U-Haul trailer, which is more than 30 years old, Woodford said.
