Canadian Pacific train jumps track

OSHAWA, Ontario, June 6 (UPI) -- No one was injured when two Canadian Pacific locomotives and 27 cars jumped the track in a residential neighborhood east of Toronto, authorities said.

"For a few seconds I had a 'Lord, don't take me moment,'" Krystyn Jones, an Oshawa resident, said. "If that train had rolled over one more time, it would have been in our yard."

Flames shot out from beneath one of the locomotives just before it left the track Friday and the cars began tumbling end over end, Jones and other witnesses told the Toronto Star in a story published Saturday.

"I was no more than 30 feet from the rail cars when they jumped the track. I was not so much scared as amazed," said Earl Mackintosh, Jones' husband.

Police evacuated an estimated 1,000 residents before allowing some to return home Friday night, Oshawa Mayor John Gray said.

Cars containing the disinfectant hydrogen peroxide, and cleaning agent sodium hydroxide, derailed but were not leaking, Gray said.
