Sheriff defends decision to kill goose

LEBANON , Ohio, May 29 (UPI) -- A sheriff in Warren County, Ohio, says one of his deputies acted appropriately when the officer killed a wounded goose.

Warren County Sheriff Larry Sims said Friday while the deadly incident did take place in front of a family, Deputy Mark Pelfrey did nearly everything right when he killed the seriously wounded animal, The Cincinnati Enquirer said.

"It is our finding that Deputy (Mark) Pelfrey acted properly in killing the bird," the sheriff said in a news release.

Sims did add Pelfrey would receive a written reprimand for not properly alerting the family of his intention to kill the wounded bird, which would have allowed them time to leave the area.

Lisa Kuhn was with her husband, Artie, and their two children, ages 1 and 3, when she discovered and reported the injured bird Sunday in Deerfield Township, Ohio.

Kuhn told the Enquirer her family witnessed Pelfrey stomp and club the goose to death. The cause of the animal's injuries was not reported.
