Russia seeks access to detained students

CAIRO, May 29 (UPI) -- A Russian official said Friday his country's embassy in Cairo is trying to negotiate a meeting with the 34 Russian students detained by Egyptian authorities.

Russian Vice-Consul Yusup Abakarov told RIA Novosti all attempts to date to meet with the incarcerated students have been unsuccessful.

"So far we have not been given any access to (the students) in order to meet with them to protect their rights and to find out what the situation is," the Russian official said.

Police in Cairo have yet to offer the Russian Embassy an explanation for why the students were detained Wednesday, Abakarov added.

"We do not have any official information on this case, although we have sent queries to the foreign ministry and other government agencies. However we still do not have a list of those detained or the charges (brought against them)," he told RIA Novosti.
