Baseball bat- bouncer gets 2 years in jail

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, May 20 (UPI) -- A Canadian judge sentenced a Winnipeg bar bouncer to two years in prison for striking an unruly customer on the head with a baseball bat from behind.

The court heard a fight broke out between two patrons at the Northern Hotel Oct. 3, 2006, and Joshua Adams, 26, tried to break it up, the Winnipeg Sun reported.

Adams pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the attack on one of the fighting men, which was captured on a security video.

The 50-year-old victim fell to the ground after being hit with the bat, and both Adams and the other fighter were seen kicking the man while he was on the ground, the report said.

"Generally, I have a lot of sympathy for you doing your best to try and break up the fight," said Justice Doug Abra. "The difficulty I have is that you came up behind with the baseball bat without any warning. You crossed the line."

The victim has since recovered from his head injuries, the court heard.

At the time of the attack, Adams was on probation for making threats, the Sun said.
