Minor earthquake strikes northern Texas

DALLAS, May 17 (UPI) -- A National Weather Service meteorologist says residents in northern Texas reported being startled by a 3.3-magnitude earthquake.

NWS meteorologist Jesse Moore said, citing area resident reports, Saturday's minor earthquake shook some buildings and resulted in multiple aftershocks, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday.

Moore, whose office fielded calls from concerned citizens following the quake, said it was centered about 18 miles west of Dallas.

The meteorologist said the last earthquake in the region was a 3.0-magnitude temblor Oct. 31 near Irving.

The NWS official also downplayed concerns about quakes in northern Texas, characterizing the area as not worthy of an "earthquake country" designation, the Morning News reported.

"There's a minor fault that runs across this area," he told the newspaper. "On occasion, we will get an earthquake. This is not exactly earthquake country."
