Two Zimbabwean journalists arrested

HARARE, Zimbabwe, May 12 (UPI) -- Editors of a weekly newspaper were arrested in Zimbabwe, charged with publishing articles that may harm the credibility of law enforcement agencies.

Vincent Kahiya, editor of the Zimbabwe Independent newspaper, and Constantine Chimakure, the newspaper's news editor, were arrested Monday because of an article that included names of police and security personnel allegedly involved in kidnapping activists members of Prime Minister Morgan Tvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change party last year, CNN reported Tuesday.

"They have been detained and are most likely to appear in court on Tuesday," said Wayne Bvudzijena, Zimbabwe's police spokesman.

A number of foreign and local journalists have been arrested and many privately owned media outlets have been closed under Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's leadership.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, in a statement Monday, said it was affronted by the arrests.

"The arrest and detention of the journalists is, in the considered view of (the organization), unjustifiable and unsustainable," the statement said. "The article on which the charges appear to be based merely reported on information contained in indictment papers, which had been placed before the court by the office of the attorney general and which are now a matter of public record."
