Ky. firefighter accused of hate crime

LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 29 (UPI) -- A firefighter in Louisville, Ky., has been suspended without pay for allegedly wearing Ku Klux Klan robes to work, a police source told WKLY-TV.

The anonymous police source said Capt. Robert Heil of the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department is under investigation to determine if his alleged actions were a hate crime or an ill-advised prank, WKLY-TV, Louisville, said Wednesday.

Maggie Neutz, chairwoman of the PRP fire board, confirmed one of Heil's fellow firefighters had issued a complaint about the captain's conduct.

"Any of these complaints we do take very seriously and do make sure that we do a thorough investigation, make sure we've got our facts correct and we go from that point on," said Neutz, who would not offer specifics regarding the allegations against Heil.

WKLY said Heil's suspension marked the second PRP firefighter suspension in recent days. The TV station said firefighter David Mattingly was suspended after being arrested by police and accused of child abuse.
