7 dead, dozens hurt in Calif. bus crash

SOLEDAD, Calif., April 28 (UPI) -- A tour bus loaded with French tourists overturned in California Tuesday afternoon, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens more, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol said the Orion Pacific tour bus crashed about 3:25 p.m. at Camphora Road off Highway 101 near Soledad, KSBW-TV in Monterey reported.

The bus carried at least 48 French tourists, including children, said Brian Wiest of the state Highway patrol. Several passengers were ejected from the bus onto the highway, he said.

A spokeswoman at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital said besides those killed, several of the injured were in critical condition, the TV station reported.

The bus was carrying the tourists from San Francisco to Santa Maria, officials at Orion Pacific officials told KSBW.
