5 Tijuana cops killed, 5 hurt in shootings

TIJUANA, Mexico, April 28 (UPI) -- Five police officers were slain and five more wounded by gunmen at different locations in Tijuana, Mexico, this week, officials said.

The gun attacks began around 8 p.m. Monday with an assault that appears to have killed four officers in eastern Tijuana and continued later in other parts of the city, the Baja California Attorney General's Office told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Although no motives were detailed, the close timing of the attacks indicates they were linked and come as heavily armed drug-trafficking gangs have been targeting police, officials said.

The latest deaths brought to 12 the number of officers in Tijuana's 2,200-member police department to have been slain this year, the newspaper reported. More than 400 Tijuana police officers have either resigned or have been fired in the past year as the federal government moved to fight corruption, officials said.
