Another FARC suspect appears in court

WASHINGTON, April 27 (UPI) -- A Colombian woman pleaded not guilty Monday to charges she conspired to provide material support for Colombia's armed rebels.

Luz Mery Gutierrez Vergara, 32, appeared in a federal court in Washington for her arraignment on charges she attempted to "procure weapons, ammunition, high technology devices, money, and other materials and supplies" to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, the U.S. Justice Department said in a news release.

Vergara is the latest in a long line of Colombian suspects sent to the United States to face criminal charges for alleged ties to FARC as part of a special agreement between Washington and Bogota to combat the rebel group, which traffics in illegal drugs and has waged a decades-long war against the Colombian government.

Both the United States and Colombia have designated the FARC a terrorist organization.
