Texas eyeing minimum grade policy change

AUSTIN, Texas, April 20 (UPI) -- The Texas Senate is set to consider proposed legislation that would end the ongoing education policy of minimum grades for students, a senator says.

Texas Sen. Jane Nelson, a Republican, said she has proposed policy changes that would allow teachers throughout the state to give students scores lower than 50, the typical minimum grade they can earn, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram said Monday.

"That bill, I think, is the most important education bill I've carried in a while," said Nelson, who is also the Senate Health and Human Services Committee chairwoman.

Texas Classroom Teachers Association official Holly Eaton supports the bill going before the Senate, saying its passage could help motivate those students dependent on minimum grading.

"If you are being hamstrung by the district and not being allowed to give the grade that the student earned, that will do little to motivate the student, little to help the student and little to give confidence in the grading system," the association's director of professional development and advocacy told the Star-Telegram.
