House gym scrubbed for staph

WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- A congressional gym in Washington has been given a thorough cleaning after a House staffer became infected with an antibiotic resistant super bug.

The staffer, who has not been identified, is a member of the House Staff Fitness Center, ABC News reported Thursday.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus often spreads in gyms and locker rooms.

Gary Simon, director of infectious disease at George Washington University, said most people who become infected with MRSA have no noticeable symptoms or a skin infection that causes a boil. But in a few cases, the disease goes wild, consuming flesh and leaving victims disfigured.

The flesh-eating form can be fatal.

The gym has been washed down with a germicidal cleaner, officials say.
