The first bomb, strapped to a bicycle, exploded in a crowded market in Guwahati, Assam's main city, killing seven and injuring dozens in a fire that destroyed two cars, 20 motorcycles and a three-story building housing the local police station, CNN reported.

Hours later, a second bomb in the district killed one person and injured five in Dhekiajuli.

Three remaining blasts, which caused injuries, were of lower intensity, said G.M. Srivastava, Assam's police chief.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the bombings and said he planned to travel to Assam Tuesday as scheduled, Press Trust of India reported.
