Informant: Leader talked of editor's death

OAKLAND, Calif., March 6 (UPI) -- An informant told prosecutors that the leader of Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland, Calif., admitted arranging the killing of a newspaper editor.

The Chauncey Bailey Project, set up by journalists to investigate Bailey's August 2007 killing, said it obtained documents this week from the Alameda County Prosecutor's Office involving Yusuf Bey IV. Bey reportedly told a jailhouse informant that he had to "sacrifice a soldier" to kill Bailey.

Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post, had been investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery when he was gunned down as he walked to work. Devaughndre Broussard, a member of the group who has been charged with the crime, confessed to the killing but then retracted it.

Bey also boasted that a member of the Oakland Police Department, Detective Sgt. Derwin Longmire, was a "sympathizer." Broussard confessed immediately after Longmire left him and Bey alone for a few minutes without recording them.

While Bey is jailed awaiting trial on other charges, he has yet to be charged with the Bailey killing. Reporters Without Borders released a statement Friday calling for Bey to be charged.
