Storm brings twisters, flash floods

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- At least three tornado touchdowns were reported Saturday in eastern Alabama as a severe storm hit the southeastern states.

National Weather Service experts were to examine the damage to determine if the storms were actually tornadoes, WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Ala., reported.

The storms brought down power lines, toppled some small trees and damaged buildings. But no major injuries were reported.

The storm brought heavy rain to the region, AccuWeather.com reported, with flash floods in Mississippi. It was expected to move north Saturday night to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, with rain changing to snow in mountain areas.

Another winter storm was predicted to bring snow to the Carolinas late Saturday before barreling up the East Coast to the mid-Atlantic states and New England. Mountainous areas from Georgia to Virginia could get the heaviest snow they have seen in March since the 1993 storm.

The storm was expected to hit Washington first and then New York on Sunday, gaining strength on its way northeast to New England Monday.

AccuWeather.com predicted 6-10 inches of snow in Boston and more than a foot in areas to the west.
