Virginia prayer bill advances

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Senate lawmakers in Virginia will consider legislation that would allow state police chaplains to pray on the job as they wish.

The bill, which has already cleared the House, is set to be heard Friday by a Senate committee, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia has threatened to sue if the bill becomes law. The organization says the legislation gives government the right to dictate what goes into a prayer uttered during official functions.

Kent Willis, the group's executive director, acknowledged that the ACLU, under different circumstances, would fight for an individual's right to pray as he chooses.

"Maybe the worst part of all this is now you have the government deciding what's a proper prayer and what's not a proper prayer," Willis said.
