10 die in police raid on Brazilian slum

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A police drug sweep in a Rio de Janeiro slum left 10 people dead, authorities said.

Police said the victims, including two teenage boys, were suspected drug dealers, the BBC reported Thursday.

Three hundred police officers, reinforced by armored vehicles and helicopters, were involved in the raids carried out across four of Rio de Janeiro's shanty towns, the British network said.

The raids followed a Tuesday visit by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to one of two poverty-stricken neighborhoods where police are trying a community policing approach to breaking the drug traffickers' hold in the city's hundreds of slum neighborhoods.
