LA City Council approves elephant habitat

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to complete construction of the six-acre, $42 million Pachyderm Forest for elephants at the city's zoo.

The council approved the project 11-4, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Opponents of the project -- who it costs too much and is too small for the elephants -- marshaled celebrities including singer Cher and actress Lily Tomlin.

Supporters told officials the project would be good for elephants at the zoo.

"No disrespect, but if you want to know about a concert, talk to Cher," zookeeper Joshua Sisk told council members. "If you want to know about the zoo, let's talk to professionals at the zoo."
