Canadians flock south for Obama's big day

TORONTO, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A southern exodus of Canadians is set to begin next weekend by supporters who want to attend U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration.

A Globe and Mail review across the country found groups had chartered buses, others were flying to Washington, and one U.S. car-pooling agency has begun booking its first clients from Toronto and Montreal.

Glyn Lewis, the 25-year-old co-founder of Canadians for Obama, told the newspaper he booked his flight from Vancouver to Washington before Obama had even won the Democratic nomination.

In Saskatchewan, University of Regina undergraduate student Daphne Cocks has a busy schedule planned in Washington next Tuesday. Through an organization called Presidential Classroom, she got invitations to the inaugural ceremony, the inaugural parade, an inaugural ball and several lectures on politics and the U.S. Constitution, the Globe said.

Meanwhile, the report said Canadians were entering "inauguration" into the Google Internet search engine second only to U.S. users.
