Indonesians isolated by floods

MAKASSAR, Indonesia, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Residents of small settlements in the Indonesian province of West Sulawesi have been isolated by flood waters at least 3 feet deep, a resident says.

While no flood-related fatalities had been reported, submerged roads and inaccessible bridges have resulted in several villages being cut off from surrounding communities, The Jakarta Post reported Saturday.

A Polewali Manar resident identified only as Rusman said flood waters up to 6 1/2 feet deep began cutting off area communities due to heavy rainfall that began Thursday.

"Today, the water level reaches more than 1 meter (more than 3 feet) high, while in Tinambung, Tutar and Mapilli the flood reached 2 meters high," Rusman said Friday.

"The flood inundated residents houses even though they are built on stilts."

In addition to the floodwaters, the Post said portions of the area lost power Saturday and six regional districts had been besieged by landslides.
