Thailand seeking Govt. House compensation

BANGKOK, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The People's Alliance for Democracy should pay $530,000 in compensation for damage its members caused to the Government House, the Thai government alleges.

The Thai News Agency said Friday that a lawsuit filed by Mongkhol Saenghiran of the Permanent Secretary Office of the Prime Minister's Office accused the political party of damaging the site while residing there.

PAD officials had been occupying the government site since last August before withdrawing from the compound on Dec. 3.

Saenghiran alleges during that time, on-site computer systems were severely vandalized and other items were also damaged.

The news agency said PAD officials had moved into the Government House in Bangkok to oppose the government of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Wongsawat left his post last December after the ruling People Power Party was found guilty of electoral fraud by the Supreme Court. His resignation prompted PAD officials to withdraw from Government House.
