Peters, ex-mayor of Hartford, Conn., dies

HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Mike Peters has died suddenly of liver failure in Hartford, Conn., the city where he served four terms as mayor, his sister, Geraldine Sullivan, says.

Sullivan said her brother died last weekend after his health suddenly deteriorated as part of his ongoing struggle with liver failure that had included a transplant in October 2008, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant said Monday.

"He fought to the bitter end, and with each complication he got weaker, but he fought until the end and was interested in everything to the end, including all of the Hartford news," Sullivan said of her brother's death Sunday.

Current Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez remembered Peters, who served as the city's elected leader between 1993 and 2001, as a champion for members of the public.

"There isn't a fight he wouldn't take on," Perez told the Courant. "Sadly, he lost his fight for his health but will always be remembered for his passion for his beloved Hartford and for the contributions he made to help us become New England's rising star."

The only reported survivor of the former fireman was Sullivan, who once served as city council majority leader.
