Commandos, militants clash in Mumbai

MUMBAI, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The terrorist attacks in India appeared to be winding to a conclusion early Saturday as the Mumbai's police chief said two gunmen were killed, CNN-IBN reported.

"The last two terrorists have been killed a short while ago," police Chief Hussain Gafoor said. "It's completely over, except for the fact that now we will start searching the (Taj) hotel and sanitizing it against any explosives and against any other things that may have been left behind."

However, another official said the situation remained unresolved, CNN-IBN said. J.K. Dutt, director-general of the national security guard, said the situation at the Taj hotel was ongoing.

Shortly before the chief's announcement, a fire broke out on the ground floor and consumed much of the building. It was brought under control by 8:30 a.m., local time

The death toll from the attacks that started Wednesday reached 160 people, including five Americans, and hundreds more were injured, CNN-IBN reported. Maharashtra state official Bhushan Gagrani said the toll was expected to go higher. Eleven terrorists also were killed, CNN-IBN reported.

Who was responsible for the well-planned, vicious attacks remained uncertain. Pranab Mukherjee, external affairs minister for Maharashtra state, said initial evidence suggests "some elements in Pakistan are involved." Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also indicated a Pakistani connection.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said an official from his country's intelligence agency would be assigned to the investigation.
