SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Police in Santa Barbara, Calif., say they arrested a woman who led a fundraising drive to find housing for three nuns and then allegedly pocketed the donations.
Denise D'Sant Angelo was charged with grand theft after spearheading the effort that raised $13,800 that was supposed to go to the three Roman Catholic sisters whose previous home was sold to pay off a massive sex-abuse settlement against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The (Santa Barbara, Calif.) Daily Sound reported Tuesday that D'Sant Angelo, president of Save Our Sisters, deposited 10 checks worth about $2,800 into her own account.
The newspaper also noted the nuns' convent never was actually placed on the market because it had been sold to a local parish. The sisters have, however, been relocated to other convents.
