Gore campaigns for Senate candidate

ATLANTA, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Former Vice President Al Gore is among big-name surrogates campaigning in Georgia, where one of the last two U.S. Senate races remains unsettled.

Gore was in the state Sunday campaigning for Democrat Jim Martin, a former Georgia state lawmaker who is trying to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, CNN reported Sunday.

The two candidates face off in a runoff Dec. 2 because neither candidate won at least 50 percent plus one of the vote. Chambliss fell just shy of that threshold, forcing the runoff.

Last week, former President Bill Clinton was in Atlanta campaigning for Martin. President-elect Barack Obama is featured on a radio ad endorsing Martin that began airing Friday.

Meanwhile, former Republican presidential candidates Arizona Sen. John McCain, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have campaigned with Chambliss.

Democrats are hoping to win the Senate seat in Georgia so they can boost their majority in the upper house. So far this year, Democrats have picked up seven Senate seats. In addition to the race in Georgia, Minnesota's Senate contest is still undecided.
