Report: E.coli outbreak in Ontario

NORTH BAY, Ontario, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Health officials in Ontario, Canada, allege at least 50 people who ate at a Harvey's restaurant have been sickened and more cases are expected.

The source of the contamination has yet to be determined, the Globe & Mail reported Thursday of the outbreak that began last weekend among people who reported eating at a Harvey's in North Bay.

Fourteen diners were confirmed to have been sickened by E.coli bacteria while 38 other cases linked to the same restaurant remain under investigation, said Catherine Whiting, a medical officer for the North Bay Health Unit.

More cases were anticipated because it takes several days for people to fall ill after coming into contact with E.coli, Whiting said, adding the investigation is focused on common foods consumed by the victims, such as meat and lettuce.
