OMAHA, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- A man who left all nine of his children, ages 1 to 17, at a Nebraska hospital will not be charged due to the state's "safe haven" law, officials said Thursday.
The unidentified man left his children at Omaha's Creighton University Medical Center Wednesday night, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
The state Department of Health and Human Services had no immediate comment.
There was no report of who or where the children's mother is.
Nebraska lawmakers said they might seek to clarify the law, intended to protect newborn children if a parent is overwhelmed.
Nebraska's law, which took effect in July, sets no age limit on children who can be left at hospitals, suggesting children up to age 19 can be abandoned with no parental penalties, the newspaper said.
The maximum drop-off age under similar laws in other states is 1 year old and most limit drop-offs to within one month of birth, the newspaper said.
In the week-and-a-half before Wednesday, at least two teens and one preteen were dropped off at eastern Nebraska hospitals, the newspaper said.
