Doctor who made false charge reinstated

LONDON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Britain's General Medical Council has reinstated a pediatrician found guilty of serious professional misconduct for accusing a father of killing his two sons.

Chairman Andrew Reid of the GMC's fitness-to-practice panel, says Dr. David Southall, 60, has expressed remorse for his actions and demonstrated "considerable insight" into his failings, The Times of London reported Monday.

Southall was barred from his child protection work after saying that it was "beyond a reasonable doubt" that Steve Clark had killed his two infant sons. Southall made the comment after watching a television program about the case of Clark's wife, Sally, who was convicted and jailed for killing the boys in 1999, The Times reported.

Sally Clark was later cleared by the Court of Appeals and released from prison. Steve Clark was also exonerated in the deaths.

The government is reported to be reviewing a number of criminal cases in which David Southall gave evidence for the prosecution, The Times said.
