Serbia seeks U.N. vote on Kosovo

NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says he will urge a United Nations committee to take up the legality of Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Jeremic, in New York Wednesday to address the 28-member U.N. General Committee, says it's important for Serbia to get the matter of Kosovo's declaration before the U.N. General Assembly, which in turn could refer it to the International Court of Justice in The Hague for a decision on its legality, B92 reported.

Jemeric told the Belgrade daily newspaper Blic the country would continue to press its ICJ request despite European requests that it drop the matter, saying, "So far, pressure on Serbia to drop the initiative has been extremely strong, but it soon became clear that this would not happen."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso Tuesday also urged Serbia to drop its efforts to bring Kosovo's independence before the ICJ, telling B92, "I have spoken to Serbian President Boris Tadic. It is obvious that Serbia's position and the position of the majority of EU member states are in conflict when it comes to Kosovo's status, but I hope that we'll manage to overcome that."
