Swedish chief cites cops in captive case

JONKOPING, Sweden, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A Swedish police chief says his officers are guilty of misconduct for not following up on a report of an elderly woman being held captive in a rural cabin.

The unnamed chief, who leads the local constabulary in Jonkoping, Sweden, has filed official misconduct complaints against officers on his staff because they allegedly waited 10 months before investigating reports that a disabled woman had been held captive for nine years by her male partner, the Swedish news agency TT reported Monday.

People who knew the couple in the south central Swedish town of Eksjo said they saw the man hit the woman with a crutch last November, reported it to police, but never saw any follow-up. Police didn't investigate until last week, and the man is now in custody, TT said.

The matter now goes before Prosecutor Klas Lorefors, who will be in charge of the investigation of the man, whom police allege held the elderly woman, reportedly suffering from multiple sclerosis, in a small cabin since 1999.
