Fatality at shopping mall shooting range

EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A man was shot and killed at a gun range in Canada's vast West Edmonton Mall, but police say it wasn't a criminal incident.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Wild West Shooting Center, the Edmonton Sun reported.

The victim was a man in his late 40s or early 50s, and was identified by police, who didn't release his name, the Edmonton Journal said.

The man was taking part in handgun shooting, but witnesses said for some reason, he crawled under the barrier that separates shooters from the targets. Witnesses told police staff shouted "Cease fire" several times, but the man was struck before the shooting ended, the Sun said.

Acting Inspector Darcy Strang told reporters it appeared to be non-criminal.

"At this point, we don't believe there are any safety concerns in relation to this. They did the best they could at this point," Strang said.

In July 2007, one man was killed and another injured in separate incidents at the facility.
