2 missing hikers found in Canada

LYTTON, British Columbia, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Two missing hikers in western Canada have been found hungry but safe, police say.

The 60-year-old man from Salmon Arm and 52-year-old woman from Peachland had been without food for three days before they were spotted Sunday in a park near Lytton, British Columbia, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The pair, whose names weren't released, had set out on a trip 18 days ago in Stein Valley Nlaka'pamux Heritage Park, the CBC said. Relatives had alerted police Friday when the hikers failed to show up as planned, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Tim Shield said in a statement.

Aerial and ground searches, including the use of specially trained dogs, Friday and Saturday turned up their vehicles but the pair wasn't found until Sunday. They were airlifted to safety.

The hikers, who were uninjured, had failed to bring a map with them and otherwise were ill-equipped for dealing with the park's rugged and remote terrain, the police said.
